Chapter One
Ten Reasons to Have Family Reunions
Secret Number One:
Family reunions offer the best opportunity to reinforce family values
Coming together is a beginning.
Keeping together is progress.
Working together is success.
~ Henry Ford
“I can’t wait to see Elizabeth this year—with the new baby!”
“Do you really want to go again this year?”
“Mom, do I have to go?”( with the appropriate “teenager’s whine”).
Family reunions—love them or hate them, we feel drawn to them.
The family reunion, well planned, well conducted, and with full participation, can accomplish many good things. In this handbook we will share details of how one nuclear family has done this effectively. We have had our challenges. However, since 1946 we have planned and executed annual family gatherings from all across the nation for more than forty consecutive years.
A number of our friends have expressed their dismay. “Why would you possibly want to do that?” But even more of our friends have wistfully said, “I wish we could do that!”
In order to maintain our long run of success, several of our family members have been deeply involved in the long-term planning, giving serious consideration to every aspect of family reunions.
Before we talk about the how, let me offer to help you understand the why. Make no mistake; it requires serious effort and equally important, thoughtful, strategic planning. Our experience has taught us that even with the effort required, the Results Are Worth It!
Why would anyone come to a family reunion?
